Tried this with my father's Redmi Go and updated it with Android 11 which was most it could handle. The software was called CAOS and made the phone last longer in battery life and made it super smooth and fast with all the Android 11 features.
Mind you, the new phone costed less than $40. But on the downside because the Android 11 system package was so large they couldn't fit Google properiety apps or even Play Store inside the OS.
No, my father doesn't have to live without Gapps, however, it was impossible to flash open Gapps because of no system space available in partition.
There's a magisk module available for Android 11 and + that allows you to have Gapps but not on system partition. Best part is you can turn them off or on based on your requirements/use and or remaining battery life for a boost on the juice.
The only downside is that this just means your phone will be rooted and some banking apps do not like that.
